How To ... Create an Optical Illusion with Makeup

Optical Illusions Play with light and dark shades of eyeshadow to enhance the size of eyes or to bring eyes further or closer apart. 1. BRING WIDE-SET EYES CLOSER TOGETHER Apply darker colors at the inner half of your lids, closest to the nose. 2. MAKE CLOSE-SET EYES APPEAR WIDER APART Highlight inner corners with a light flesh-tone liner and shimmery pearl shadow. 3. MAKE SMALL EYES LOOK BIGGER Line lower lids with a nude or very light color liner to make the whites of your eyes brighter. 4. MAKE EYES REALLY POP Add a pale iridescent shadow in the center of lids and line lower inner lids with a white liner.

How To ... Shape Your Face with Makeup

Face Shaping: You can use foundation or pressed powder to accentuate your best features and minimize the others. All you need are 3 different shades: Base – a shade that matches your skin exactly. Highlight – a shade lighter. Contour – a shade darker. The Highlight shade brings features forward. The Contour shade makes them recede.

NARROW YOUR NOSE Highlight down the center of your nose to the width that you want to appear, then place contour on either side of the nose. Blend well. SOFTEN A HEAVY JAW LINE Shade around square jawline to make that area recede and create a more oval shape. Blend borders with a base shade. GET HIGH CHEEKBONES Shade round cheeks to make them recede, then highlight top of cheekbones to make them more prominent and lifted like those of a model. Blend base to borders…beautiful!

STEP 1: Spritz mega volume root lifting spray on damp, just-washed hair to help increase thickness at the roots. Blow-dry hair using a diffuser to bring out natural curl. Still straight? Curl the entire head away from the face using a 1"- or 1 1/4"-inch iron.

STEP 2: Run fingers through the hair to break up curls and give hair a more natural texture. Gather the top section of hair at the crown and pin it up, out of the way.

STEP 3: Take the sections of hair on both sides of the head right below the crown, make a ponytail and secure with an elastic.

STEP 4: Unclip the top section and lightly back comb it at the roots. Pull the section back and determine height and shape of the poof. Secure the poof with bobby pins.

STEP 5: Smooth curl goddess silkening serum through small sections of hair to help limit frizz and keep curls silky.

A new mascara every 3 month? HUH?!

Did you know that you should change your mascara once every three months? I didn’t. I had to find out from another Avon representative who was giving a lecture. What else didn’t I know?

Why do I need to change my mascara every three months? I figured it was just a way for the makeup companies to get more money out of me by playing to my fears of gross makeup and stuff actually doing bodily damange. I mean, really, who doesn’t have makeup that’s a year old that they still use on occasion? (And yes, I’ll admit that I have a eye shadow pot that I treasure from Body and Body Works (back when they had their own makeup line in 1998ish) that I still use to this day because I love the color!)

But what’s the deal? Why do I have to buy new mascara so often? From the internet research I could find (which isn’t saying much as I often question the veracity of internet claims), it looks like there has been a trend since 2003 to put “use by” dates on makeup so that we (as consumers) are not opening ourselves up to contamination, infections, and chemical burns (mostly from “natural products” that have gone rancid!)

But basically, this is the motto I subscribe to: if it’s going on my eyelashes or lips (two areas very close to orifices – e.g. my mouth and my eyes) I’m going to replace it when it’s time to replace it!

Here are some signs that your mascara needs replacing:

1. If it becomes clumpy
2. If it appears flaky and dry
3. If you notice a change in its color
4. If you notice it has a funky or rancid smell
5. If you recently had an eye infection (continuing to use it can lead to further infection and contamination)
6. If the mascara in the tube has come into contact with water (water contains bacteria)

So … every 3 months, I purchase new mascara; one that’s best for me.
